Balaton

Lake Balaton is Central Europe’s largest lake. With 315km of shoreline, it has been a popular tourist resort for the Hungarians for centuries. Its pleasant, continental climate ensures warm summers, where the lake water reaches an average temperature of 25C – ideal for swimming, sailing, fishing and other water sports. The warm summers also make it a choice climate for agriculture and the region is renowned for its fine vineyards and wines. In the winter, Hungary sparkles. Lake Balaton inevitably freezes over, making it a perfect location for ice skating, sledging, ice fishing, and even ice sailing.

The Lake Balaton area abounds in natural spas, so whatever the season, there are warm, natural waters waiting to soothe and relax you. The Surroundings countryside includes some of the most beautiful, unspoilt farmland in the region. Rolling meadows of wild flowers and bubbling streams flowing over waterfalls into rippling pools create the perfect backdrop for castles and quaint villages with cobblestone streets and hidden treasures.

The towns along the shores of Lake Balaton have a rich cultural heritage and there are regular ferries between them all, so there is every opportunity to visit the abundance of museums, art galleries and concert halls. Throughout the year there are music festivals, operetta performances, organ recitals, and for the inspired, art and music courses. There is also a lively nightlife with a wide variety of first-class restaurants, bars and clubs.
